Day 2 Highlights: May 2024
Day 2 of the Aiken Garden Show started off on the wet side, with fewer crowds than yesterday. However, the sun did make a few appearances, brightening the day and lifting spirits.
Meet the “Bachelor” Monarch
One of the day’s highlights was borrowing a male Monarch butterfly from Elizabeth Shirey. Nicknamed the “Bachelor,” he became a star attraction, captivating guests with his elegance and grace.
Milkweed Magic
We also had a special milkweed plant from club member, Polly Stimmel, boasting seven Monarch eggs. Watching live butterflies and tiny eggs up close was an exciting experience for everyone, emphasizing the critical role milkweed plays in the Monarch lifecycle.
Team Effort
Pat Dunlop, vice president of The Butterfly Monarch Club, and Susan Potter, president of The Butterfly Monarchy Club, were thrilled to be joined by club member Joanne Hamilton and Claire Cunningham. Their enthusiasm and knowledge added to the day’s success. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed items for our information table, making it a hub of activity and learning.
Spreading the Word
We reached a large number of Aiken residents, inspiring many to plant native milkweed in their yards and gardens this summer. Remember, if you plant milkweed 🌱, the Monarchs 🦋 will come.
Thank you to all who visited and supported our efforts. Together, we’re making a difference for Monarch butterflies!
